Looking to relax today? There’s no song better than ‘Mo Ghile Mear’, which is one of the most stunning songs in the Irish language and is beautifully performed by the UCD Choral Scholars.

Written in the 18th century by Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill and composed as Aisling poetry, it is a lament by the Gaelic goddess Éire.

The song slightly differs from conventional Aisling poems in that Ireland is personified as a woman (Éire) who was once a fair madien but is now a widow. Her husband ‘the Gallant Hero’ isn’t dead but very far away and, as a consequence, the land is failing and nature itself is in decline.
