Christmas TV exists to fill you full of cheer and goodwill, right?

Okay, most of it does. But there are some that opt for an alternative emotional ethos. Here are some of the most powerful.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)

When people think of Frank Capra’s masterpiece they think of this

They don’t think of this.

Or this

Yes, it’s a feel good film, but you only feel good after watching the relentless suffering of a man who was nothing but nice. Yes, it has a happy ending but it’s impossible to see it through your misty eyes.

But that’s enough of that. How about some Disney. They never make anyone cry right?

THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL (2006)

A beautiful little animation based on Hans Christian Andersen’s much overlooked short story, this version is set at Christmas and is a commentary of how the poor and downtrodden get by during a cold winter. There are some staggeringly gorgeous moments.

But being based on an old story for children, it wouldn’t be complete without heartbreaking tragedy.

Result?

I need a break. Let’s move on to a Christmas special of a legendary television show.

The West Wing-In Excelis Dio (1994)

The Whole White House has the spirit of Christmas. Cranky old Josh warms Donna’s heart with a thoughtful gift.

Charlie asks Mrs. Landingham about Christmas memories of her twin sons.

Then WHAM!

Right. Time for the all time classic I watch every year.

THE SNOWMAN (1982)

Haven’t seen it in ages. This version has a pointless intro by David Bowie?

Apologies. Nothing with David Bowie in it could be pointless. Anyway, this is about a young boy who builds a magical snowman.

The become great friends.

Then

Why do I watch this every year?

An even bigger question is why would anyone deliberately set out to cry at this time of year? I get not everyone is enthusiastic about Christmas.

But if that’s the case, why make it worse. Why not watch the Christmas Father Ted? Something to take the misery out of Christmas?

Oh. Well. There you are. Havea miserable Christmas then so.
