*SPOILER WARNING*

Death is a natural part of life that we are all faced with sooner or later. Fictional deaths however happen at a far more frequent rate than I would like. From comics to tv shows there have been many characters killed off that got some reaction from me. Be it anger and confused or sadness and disbelief.

I am one of those people who gets attached to characters easily, if I like them of course.

Fred Weasley – Harry Potter

I cared a lot more about Fred’s death than Dumbledore’s. Fred Weasley was one of those character I desperately wanted to be friends with so when he was slain in the Battle of Hogwarts I was devastated. There were a lot of deaths in that book for me at that tender age, so I didn’t take it too well. What hurt the most was imagining how George and the rest of the Weasleys felt. To this day thinking about it chokes me up.

Honourable Mentions: Dobby, Sirius, Snape, Dumbledore, Tonks and Remus.

Wash – Firefly

I was very late to the Firefly party but luckily avoided all spoilers back then. So it came as a huge surprise when Wash was brutally impaled in the Serenity movie. The first emotion I felt was shock. They wouldn’t, no, couldn’t do that to Wash. He was a part of the ship, he made her soar. I switched the movie off at that point and had a good cry.

Of all the people on that ship Wash was one of my favourites. Hoban Washburne was kind hearted, gentle, loyal and protective, all those attributes combined with colourful shirts and a love of dinosaurs won my heart.

Oberyn Martell – Game of Thrones

I could see this death coming from a mile away. There was no way this badass, swaggering peacock of a man was going to last in Game of Thrones. If there is one thing we should all know about this show, it is that no one is safe.

I was more angry than sad about this. If he had just gotten to the point and killed the Mountain he would still be alive but no, he had to get a confession out of him. The only reason he chose to come to Kings Landing was to get revenge for his sister Elia Martell and her children but he lost sight of the goal and lost his head as a result.

Barb – Stranger Things

I know a lot of people didn’t care for Barbara Holland aka Barb. Personally I loved her. Yes she wasn’t in the show for that long but from what I saw of her she seemed like someone I’d like to know. Barb was a good friend to Nancy, she wanted to make sure her friend was careful and cautious in her budding relationship with Steven. Her dedication to her best friend is what made me like her. Typically the best friend is the one that goads the main character into going to the party etc which was a nice change.

Even after being effectively dismissed by Nancy. Barb choses to hang around to make sure her friend is okay. Unfortunately the blood from her wound draws the monster to her and she gets taken into the Upside Down. We eventually see her struggle to get away from the monster and fail. Her death doesn’t seem to have been easy or quick by any means.

I also felt incredibly sorry for her because it looks like her mom didn’t seem to care that she had gone missing.

Kamina – Gurren Lagaan

Gurren Lagaan is a gem of an anime. It is consistently in my top 10 anime list. I love short anime that pack a punch and this one definitely did. It follows the story of Simon and Kamina two humans who live in subterranean villages under the tyrannical rule of Lordgenome. Simon and Kamina want to live on the surface and has a result have to fight to do so.

Kamina essentially becomes a big brother to Simon and the bond they form as a result is amazingly strong. So you can imagine how devastating his death is when Kamina dies fighting along side Simon in their mech. Kamina’s last words to Simon are those of encouragement and empowerment and it is truly beautiful. I wept for about an hour and had to wait 1 week before watching it again.

He was one in a million.

Nina Tucker – Full Metal Alchemist

This by far one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in an anime. There is just something so harrowing about what happens to Nina that years later it brings up strong felling whenever I remember it.

Nina Tucker was a wonderful and friendly little girl who loved her father dearly, In comparison her father was a work obsessed lunatic. How he could make his daughter and her dog a chimera I do not know. How heartless do you have to be to do that?

Honorable Mention: Mes Hughes

Tadashi Hamada – Big Hero 6

I did not see this one coming at all. I guess I was too optimistic that Tadashi would make it out of that burning building alive. The way he died was also quite shocking. He effectively burned alive trying to save someone else. Disney got me with this one. My heart bled for his younger brother Hero. The boys had already lost their parents and not Hero lost his brother? It seemed very cruel of Disney to do that.

Little Foots Mom – Land Before Time

It’s been 10 years. I am still not over this.

This was the first cartoon death I saw and understood for what it was. I was so upset that this happened to Little Foot that I cried so much I gave myself the hiccups, a headache and an upset stomach.

Mufasa – Lion King

mufasa

The series of events that led to Mufasa’s death built the atmosphere very well.

To this day it still makes me cry to see Simba trying wake his dad up. The innocence of Simba’s actions and Scars betrayal made me so confused. I was devastated for Simba but was furious with Scar.

I’m pretty sure I kept my sister at arms length for a while after seeing that.

David Tennant – Doctor Who

The 10th Doctor was the Doctor I feel for. He was great in so many ways. If I went into them all we would be here for a very long time. His regeneration was devastating and I still want him back.

There have been countless deaths that have gotten me in the feels. A few of these still feel fresh whereas others have healed over time.
