This week sees the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek. To honour this special occasion I shall be highlighting some of my favourite musical moments associated with this fascinating franchise.
Fear of Pop an experimental group by Ben Folds featured William Shatner as a special guest on one track for their self titled debut album. Folds continued to work with Shatner and produced his second full length LP after the infamous Transformed Man. Entitled Has Been, it is a beautiful and introspective piece of work with some very emotional moments.0807
My favourite track on the album has to be the most unique collection of talent ever assembled on one song. ‘That’s Me Trying’ tells the story of an elderly father trying to reconnect with his daughter after never being there for her. Written by English novelist Nick Hornby with additional vocals by Ben Folds and Aimee Mann, the honesty, love and regret expressed by William Shatner is genuinely moving. So may things have been said about Shatner’s music but ‘That’s Me Trying’, and indeed Has Been, certainly deserve to be your collection.
