We’re all in lock up, binging on the newest season of Orange Is The New Black today, our track of the day is a classic straight from the soundtrack: ‘Gangsta’ by the tUnE-yArDs. This is the song that first plays when our heroine, Piper is sorted into the black girls dorm. It fits pretty much perfectly into the scene. Not only because Piper was raised in the farthest thing from a ghetto but because of how it shows Piper’s emotions. To her, this is a strange place. She has no idea how to proceed as an outsider. To her, this is all weird.
And make no mistake, this song is also weird! I don’t just mean the music video, either. The video looks like a really weird monochrome acid trip, but it fits the song. It’s repetitive enough to get stuck in your head, but it switches rhythm, tune and tone more than you can count in just 3 minutes. It might not be easy listening, but it’s interesting.
