Although Robert Kirkman‘s The Walking Dead series sets the standard for zombie comics everywhere, there are still plenty of titles out there that are stellar, interesting stories with great characters and art.

As we’re in a real zombie mood this weekend, we’ve put together a list of titles for you to check out, so get ready to bust our your wallets and start hating us now because you’re going to want to read all of these!

Fanboys VS Zombies

Fanboys VS. Zombies

From BOOM! Studios, this story follows a crew of feuding best friends who find themselves trapped inside the largest comic con in America where the inhabitants have been transformed into a horde of the undead.

Fanboys VS. Zombies is an awesome homage to geek fandom with a fun blend of eccentric quirks, comedy and zombie bashing action.

Written by Sam Humphries with art by new talent Jerry Gaylord, this story is a must-read!

Zombies HI

Zombies HI

Created by an Irish team, Zombies HI is set in Northern Ireland and published by Uproar Comics in Derry. The story is set in the Walled City and is about Derry’s inhabitants trying to hold out against a zombie invasion while also dealing with the threat of the IRA.

It’s written by Danny McLaughlin and drawn by Kevin ‘Gio’ Logue with inking by John Campbell. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, this black and white comic is a great title to read with funny dialogue and interesting plot lines. If, like us, you support talented Irish creators, make sure to pick up this great horror title.

Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse

Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse

This is a two part horror comedy series from the creators of Grimm Fairy Tales and if you ever wanted to see your least favourite celebrities meet a very gory end at the hands of ravenous zombies then this is the comic for you.

It follows an unknown actor called Michael as he finally gets his big break starring A-listers in a big Hollywood movie. However, a zombie outbreak hits during the script reading party at a swanky hotel and Michael scrambles as he takes on the role of leader to save himself and his fellow cast from being eaten.

If this incredibly funny parody sounds like your cup of tea you can check out a free preview here.

iZombie

iZombie

You may have heard about the show version of this comic but we here at The Arcade are pretty snobby in that we believe you should read the comic first (it’s almost always better!)

The story is about Gwen, who can pass as a regular girl except for the fact she needs to eat a brain once a month to keep from losing her memories and intelligence. She’s a gravedigger, so she has plenty of access to recently dead people and, when she consumes the brains, she ‘inherits’ part of the deceased’s thoughts.

Beautifully drawn with excellent pacing and characters, this is a memorable zombie title that’s perfect for any zombie fan.

The New Deadwardians

The New Deadwardians

This is an eight issue comic book series by Dan Abnett with great artwork by I.N.J. Culbard and follows a Chief Inspector called George Suttle as he tries to solve crimes in post-Victorian England. In this setting, the upper classes are composed of vampires and the lower class of zombies and humans.

Suttle tries to get to the bottom of an upper-class citizen’s murder and discovers that there is much more to it than meets the eye. A really unique take on the genre, this series will tickle the fancy of anyone who loves both zombies and vampires.

The series also covers really interesting themes like class and women’s rights, for instance the suffragetets in the series fight for the right to become vampires on their own terms.

  1. You won’t go wrong with Zombi Hi! I started reading iZombie AFTER the show and I love both so… take your snobbery elsewhere McFadden
