With the mid season finale tonight and the Rory and Amy about to face off against the Weeping Angels in ‘The Angels take Manhattan’ we’ve decided to take a look at the some of the most terrifying creatures, aliens and monsters that the Doctor has ever faced. From the depths of space to the twisted ambition of alien empires, it’s all here and it’s all scary as hell and it’s all part of the Dr. Who Universe whether the Time Lord himself faces them or it’s Torchwood or Sarah Jane tackling these monstrous foes!

5/ Abbadon

The name probably doesn’t mean anything to you if you haven’t checked out spin-off series Torchwood but for fans of series this gigantic monster is something that strikes fear into the heart. It rampaged through Cardiff slaughtering everything in it’s path, leaving behind a path of chaos and destruction and while it’s colossal form was something to behold it’s true terror came from not knowing what it really was – the build up to the season finale was made all the more tense with dead characters begging for mercy and second chances at life to get out of the darkness and the monster that was chasing them through the never ending dark.

4/ The Beast

The Beast, Satan or Lucifer, whatever name this terrifying creature went by it was the embodiment of all that strikes terror into our hearts. Sealed away inside the planet Krop Tor, orbiting a black-hole it was meant to be imprisoned for all eternity until a human expedition team hoping to uncover the power source keeping the planet in orbit awoke the creature and allowing it to take control of a member of the team.
The Doctor and companion Rose Tyler came face to face with the terrifying force as it unleashed it’s wrath claiming the lives of the team one by one, turning their darkest fears and secrets against them, preying on their weaknesses and claiming to be immortal as long as it was known and feared.

Abbadon, our monster at number of five also went by the name of ‘Son of the Beast’.

3/ Vashta Nerada

Are you afraid of the dark for no reason? It’s an inherent trait built into us and the Vashta Nerada are the reason behind it. The “Shadows that melt the Flesh”, an alien race that while alone posed no real threat but travelling in packs were a force that nothing could reckon with. One of the oldest creatures in the Universe the Vashta Nerada can be found on thousands of planets across the Universe, they hunt in swarms of thousands and can strip a human body of flesh in a matter of seconds. On Earth these creatures mostly feed off the remains of road kill but the Doctor believes they are also responsible for the unexplained disappearances of hitch-hikers.

Microscopic monsters, these piranhas  also possess a level of sentience that allowed them to communicate their needs and desire to feed with the Doctor after attacking the occupants of the Library.

2/ Weeping Angels

Weeping Angels or Lonely Assassins  first appeared in ‘Blink’ they are according to the Doctor “the deadliest, most powerful, most malevolent lifeform evolution has ever produced.” and when the man who has seen the end of the Universe occur says that you know there has to be something to it. These creatures feed by sending their victims back in time and feast on the energy left behind by the person and the years of their remaining lifespan. The Doctor also referred to them as the nicest psychopaths in the Universe while they send their victims into the past they don’t actually harm or kill them and the person though slightly confused by their sudden transport back in time are alive and can live out their remaining days.

That’s not to say the Angels can’t or won’t kill and if they need to communicate possess the ability to talk only by breaking their victims neck and rearranging their brains, while they use this to speak they also use it to taunt and torment the survivors breaking their spirits.

Shocker! Yes these stone like creatures are some of the most terrifying things to ever feature in the Doctor Who Universe but they’ve been pipped to the post but by who? Click below to find out now!

1/ Humans

Annoyed? Shocked? Dismayed at our number one monster? Well allow us to explain just why the human race are the most terrifying creatures in Doctor Who. Yes, we are under the protection of a Time Lord who chooses to travel with human companions all over space and time, in us he recognises so much potential for amazing and beautiful things but in us there is also a dark and twisted side one capable of unimaginable cruelty and malice. Still don’t believe us?

Henry Van Statten, an eccentric millionaire and hoarder of Alien artefacts owns a Dalek survivor, torturing it for the sake of science he turns on the Doctor and was intenton taking the Time Lord apart to better understand the alien physiology.

Luke Rattigan plots the demise of the entire planet by allying himself with an invading Sontaran force turning the ATMOS (ATMOSpheric Emissions System) device he created to help reduce emissions from cars all around the world into deadly weapons releasing a toxic vapour lethal to humans into the atmosphere. He planned on leaving the Earth behind and taking over a new planet where he would use students in his Academy for Genius children to repopulate the world in his image.

Helen A, leader of a human colony on Terra Alpha she outlaws unhappiness utilising a secret police force to crush any resistance against her and taking out anyone unwilling to abide by the rule.

The Human Empire in 4126 is built and maintained off the back of slavery, suppressing, abusing and treating the gentle Ood as servants treated with no respect or gratitude.

John Lumic turned his own inventions that had revolutionised human society against the world in the name of his final solution, eradicating man’s greatest weakness, mortality. Driven to brink of insanity Lumic began his tests on the most vulnerable by kidnapping the homeless he began his experiments that eventually led to the creation of an alternate Universe version of the Cybermen.
