Helmsman Hikaru Sulu later Captain Sulu and more commonly referred to as Mr. Sulu has or rather will come out as a gay man in the next film. Star Trek’s Sulu first appeared in the pilot episode of the original series.

Writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung confirmed their decision to have Sulu in a same-sex relationship. It is a nod to the original actor and LGBT activist, George Takei, who played Sulu in the original series. The character is currently played by John Cho who spoke about the character history and revelation in Star Trek Beyond:
“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out [of] it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations”
Star Trek Beyond is scheduled for release late this month!
