Hey guys, and welcome to this week’s Comicphiles, where we provided some top-notch insight into those debut issues you should be reading, or avoiding. This week we’ve got a mix of comics: Hyperion #1, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1 and International Iron Man #1.

International Iron Man #1

International Iron Man

The opening issue of International Iron Man delves into the past of Tony Stark, jumping back in time 20 years to when he was a student at the University of Cambridge. While there he takes a fancy to a certain Cassandra Gillespie. However things turn south rather quickly once Hydra get involved which puts Stark in a rather sticky situation.

As far as Iron Man comics go, it is refreshing to see a almost a whole issue dedicated to Stark and his life before becoming a hero. It does seem as though this comic’s arc will very much be steered by Tony’s quest to find out the true identity of his father. Again, this is a refreshing take on the character and satisfies fans on an emotional level as opposed to some of the more over-played “Iron Man saves the world again” scenarios.

Being titled International Iron Man, it would be nice to see some more of the world. A lot of the heroes we see in popular comics all hail from the USA, so to see Stark in Cambridge in the opening issue, it has promise that we may see him venture to other countries as he tries to find out who his dad is.

Will I Continue Reading? It seems like it could go to some interesting places!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1

Being such a big Power Rangers fan growing up, when I heard about this comic, I was immediately sold. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #1 by Boom! Studios takes us back to Angel Grove where our favourite rangers are once again setting about to save the world.

This comic does try to modernise the rangers, bringing them into a more contemporary Angel Grove. Opening up with Bulk and Skull acting as reporters, who fill in a lot of backstory. The Ranger’s biggest threat is still the Evil Rita Repulsa who continuously sends her minions to earth. Bulk and Skull also fill the reader in on her creation of her very own Green Ranger to oppose the Power Rangers.

The ranger team also stays true to the original tv series cast, with Tommy, Jason, Billy, Kimberly, Zach and Trini all wielding the power of the dinosaurs, so for the nostalgia factor alone, this is a really good read.

Will I Continue Reading? I loved this. Will definitely continue to read.

Hyperion #1

Hyperion

Being the sole survivor of his universe, Hyperion is a Marvel superhero that bares many striking similarities to DC’s Man of Steel: Superman. Hyperion lives by three precepts: truth without compromise, thought without error and all things for the betterment of the whole.

Hyperion has spent time as an Avenger in the past, but more recently he has been seen among the ranks of the Squadron Supreme. A group of radical super-powered refugees, all from various different universes. The same team that killed the Atlantean king Namor in their opening issue.

Hyperion’s comic seems to revolve around an arc of Hyperion’s journey of self discovery. As his path becomes intertwined with the character of Doll who is fleeing from a carnival of super powered crazies, can she help him to discover what his true purpose on earth will be? Or will her baggage be the turning point in Hyperion’s life that makes him more villain than hero?

As a character, I have enjoyed Hyperion over the last few years, so I am very much looking forward to seeing where he goes in his own solo-comic.

Will I Continue Reading? It’s heading in an interesting direction, will read again.
