Elijah Wood has been cast as the co-lead in the upcoming BBC adaptation of Douglas Adam‘s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. The adaptation, written by Max Landis, will feature the ‘Holistic’ detective, Gently, as he attempts to solve roughly one bizarre case per season.
Wood will be playing Todd, Dirk’s assistant who prefers not to be known as his sidekick. Although Todd will provide useful help in areas Gently is less experienced in, he possesses a criminal streak and defines himself in opposition to previous detective fiction characters with the succinct phrase “I am not your Watson, a**hole.”
Written by Adams, Dirk Gently’s two novels were both released in the late eighties. Much in the same vain as the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, the books are esoteric detective stories following Gently, a private investigator who finds himself in cases in which only he can solve – a remarkable talent for an otherwise completely inept individual. Several adaptations of been of the character, with each only garnering limited success.
Dirk Gently is expected to air in Autumn 2016.
