Nintendo have officially announced that as of May 20th 2014, online services will be terminated for all Nintendo consoles before the 3DS and WiiU. This won’t affect online applications you may have installed, such as Netflix or anything similar, only the game servers. This means you can still access the eShop or internet browser on your DS and Wii. Pokémon players will no longer be able to play online using Gen IV or V games, which I think is a bold move. Pokémon has such a large community that relies on online interaction. Granted, online communication has never been as prominent as it’s become in Pokémon X and Y, but to eliminate all past generation connectivity is unfortunate.
I understand this may be a necessary move for Nintendo. Maintaining servers is difficult and expensive, and if they aren’t getting the numbers to keep it alive, it’s sadly their only choice in this situation.
