I’ve admired Siins’ work for a very long time. As a huge fan of the Yogscast, her work cropped up a lot in my Tumblr searches. I chose Siins to talk to for our very first artist spotlight because her style in incredibly unique and interesting.

1. When did you start drawing?

I started drawing from very young age, around when I was 4 years old. I started to take art as I know it very serious at around 13 though.

2. Do you work digital or traditional?

I mainly work digitally, although I sometimes do traditional as well.

3. What are your tools of the trade?

For my digital work I use a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet and I mainly draw in Paint Tool SAI. For my traditional works I most often use a brushpen.

4. Are there any artists that inspire or influence you?

There are way too many artists that have inspired and influenced me over the years and I can’t name a ”favorite” because they change so often. To keep it short, I get most inspired by my peers and online friends I suppose!

5. What’s your favourite subject matter to draw?

My favorite thing to draw is people, I guess. All sorts of characters and their designs. Faces (noses, teeth) and expressions as well!

6. Tell us about one of your characters (if you have any)?

One of my latest characters is this guy called Rob. He’s your average hipster with teal hair and freckles and he’s very apathetic and mellow. He moves around the world half asleep and because of this, he’s ended up with a curse. This curse is that one of his arms can spontaneously combust into a tangly mess of tentacles but later turn back into a regular arm. It makes his life very awkward and messy. That’s about it.

7. What’s your ultimate goal when it comes to art?

I would love to some day finally muster the strength and tackle drawing some short comics. That would be really neat. I’m also always looking forward to take part in some bigger collaborations with other artists as well, so being able to work on some cool projects would be awesome. Actually though, I think my ultimate goal would be making a really nice game. I don’t really have an ultimate goal set so I just named a lot of things that would be super awesome to do.

8. What advice would you give to aspiring artists?

My advice is, never give up! If you want to ”get good” or ”find your style” all you have to do is just draw and draw and draw. Draw from references, draw from life, draw from your head! Even on days when you don’t feel like drawing. Draw something every day! It doesn’t matter if it’s just a tiny doodle, don’t leave out days when you haven’t drawn. You can only advance by putting a lot of work and love into what you do.
