Irish Colourist Makes Marvel

Ruth Redmond, a professional comic colourist and animation student, makes her big-name debut into comics this week with her name on the cover of Marvel’s Revolutionary War: Dark Angel, written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Dietrich Smith.

Many of you will know Ruth well from trading at various Irish conventions, going by the tag, ‘MiniBubble’. She studied under the wonderfully talented Jordie Bellaire before breaking into the comic scene with a bang. Redmond has done work for Irish comic anthology, Lightning Strike, as well as doing some work with Irish creator of Half Past Danger,  Stephen Mooney.

It’s absolutely amazing to see so many Irish names in the mainstream comics scene, and for Ireland to produce another amazing female colourist is something we should all be extremely proud of. Redmond’s work is crisp and vibrant and personally, I believe she’s going to be an incredible addition to the comics scene.

We got to briefly chat to Redmond about her work, so for all of you who have an interest in breaking into the comics scene, here’s some words from a new professional on how she worked her way up!

”I’ve always liked comics! It started with collected newspaper strips and European comics, then I got hooked on manga, then I got really deep into webcomics and then I tumblr_inline_mxva4bztcD1r19tcrfinally found out American comics were actually pretty cool. Initially I had been unimpressed by all the beefy men in tight costumes punching each other, but once I actually started to read them I found they were more than that. Since I was about 16 I’d been drawing my own comics, I even saw a few in print. I thought all I wanted to do was draw comics (and I still do love drawing) but then in 2012 I met a guy called Rob Carey who late that year asked me to colour three short comics he had drawn. I was surprised by how much I loved colouring comics! I started to try to find ways to actively pursue this and in March 2013 I met the magical duo, Jordie Bellaire and Declan Shalvey. It was actually the second time I had met them but this time I knew more about what I wanted and Jordie invited me to come hang out with them and learn about colouring. This turned into a kind of informal internship. Abridged version of events; I spent my summer holidays (I’m still in college studying animation) working my butt off trying to learn as much as I could and taking any work that came my way. This resulted in my getting to work on a few short stories here and there, then a small graphic novel, then a mini-series at BOOM! studios and some other cool indie projects and now my first work at Marvel! Now at the start of 2014 I’m balancing my college work and seeing my first Marvel work in print and I’m working on a lot of really exciting stuff that I unfortunately can’t talk about just yet. I am extremely grateful for the luck I’ve had and the kindness I’ve been shown!”
