Video Game Music – The Villains

Villains make the games but the music makes the villains! We are looking at some of the best boss themed music from the world of video games. Everyone from Bowser to Sephiroth are here to represent their soundtrack and we’ve even featured Princess Peach. However it’s not possible to cram all of our favourites into one page, so we’ve only picked a random selection from our favourites!

There are plenty of others out there so next time you are playing a game stop and listen to the music just try to be quick about it chances are these guys won’t let you even have two minutes to yourself before they try to decapitate you!

Bowser – Super Mario Galaxy 2

Poor Bowser has only just made our list. The Lizard King was number one in our top villains list but unfortunately his accompany soundtracks have always been a bit bland and not really up to scratch.
While his presence might strike fear into the hearts of the people of Mushroom Kingdom his taste in music is a little… well crap! In his latest outing in SMG 2, this track was what managed to drag him into our chart.

Shadow Peach – Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Who would have thought everyone’s favourite Princess could harbour such a dark being inside her? While not exactly one of the toughest fights you had to face in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, this music did more than often to make us think twice about underestimating Peach and the Shadow Queen lurking inside her!

We’re sure the Princess would revel in the fact she beat Bowser to a better position on our track list!

Ganondorf – Zelda: Twilight Princess

The origins of Ganondorf have always been a mystery what is known about this fiendish sorcerer is his unyielding lust for power, his tyrannical ability to rule and for some reason his inability to kill Link. He is Hyrule’s greatest foe and no matter how many times Link puts him down, Ganondorf will rise again and again until he has succeeded. It is fitting then that his music piece, is a frantic and disturbing trumpeted track.

Dead Cell – MGS 2: Sons of Liberty

This track from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty speaks for itself, chaotic, electric and frightening – the perfect way to sum up Dead Cell

Jecht – Final Fantasy X

Rumours circulated for ages that this was a track by heavy metal grunge band Rammstein. It is in fact a piece composed by the master of Final Fantasy soundtracks, Nobuo Uematsu. Jecht is the unwilling antagonist in Final Fantasy X and this is the perfect piece to accompany his presence. The carnate form of Sin, Jecht is more than just a Final Boss, he is the source of pain and suffering pent up inside the protagonist Tidus. If this doesn’t give you goosebumps listening to it then we don’t know what will!

Pyramid Head – Silent Hill 2

Truthfully we were unsure about the inclusion of this track to the list of our favourite boss themes but in the end we decided that Pyramid Head’s Theme deserved it’s place. What other song in the history of video game music had us shaking with terror? We held our breath hoping the music would pass and once or twice we even muted it. Creepy and unnerving this piece of music just crawls inside your skin.

Sephiroth – Final Fantasy VII

In our list of top ten villains, Sephiroth, many would have said was cheated out of the 1st place position by Bowser but while Bowser might be able to claim the title of as Surpeme Villain, Sephiroth has taken the title of best villain theme. One Winged Angel, the Sephiroth theme is both sad and frightening, it captures the villains descent into madness and eventual transformation into a being of pure hate and rage perfectly. There is no remorse in his actions or in this music but behind it all we still find ourselves feeling bad for this weirdo who carries his dead mother’s head around in a jar!
