More famous than Chris Crocker! More popular than Fred! More talented than the gang at American Idol and X-factor combined, Jonnie Jenkins has taken the World Wide Web by storm and we’ve got great news, he is here to stay!
Jonnie or phatgaykid (his YouTube channel name) began making vlogs of himself singing and divulging some of his own personal secrets on how to sing. His first video only went up a month ago but in that time he has been featured on MTV, interviewed by Gay Times magazine and will appear on the Graham Norton show. Jonnie has made a name for himself as someone with tonnes of energy, a great spirit and the drive to get out there and doing his own thing. His channel receives a fair amount of abuse from some of the more outspoken members of the YouTube community but the young Star is taking it all in his stride and with every negative comment comes ten positive ones!
Taking time out from his day, Jonnie sits down with the @rcade for his first ever Irish interview…
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Jonnie Jenkins and I’m from Beverly Hills, California where I live with my parents, and Great Dane. I love being with my friends, visiting my grandma in the nursing home, where I am also a huge rising star!
How long have you been singing? Why did you decide to start making videos on YouTube?
I’ve been singing since I came out of the womb, according to my parents! I decided to start making YouTube videos because I have the voice of baby Jesus and 1000 angels, and I knew people needed to experience it for themselves!
Do you have a particular favourite style of music?
I really like pop and show tunes! But I am amazing at all styles!
Who are your role models?
My grandma! She is a shining star!
A lot of the comments on your videos are people wondering if you are the same in real life as you are in your videos? Do you put as much energy into your daily life as you do your singing and your videos?
Omigoshhh, for sure! I think in front of the camera you get WAY excited and give a bit extra but I’m super energetic.
How does it feel to have become something of an internet sensation?
It feels good, and right! I love every minute of it!
Do you have any advice for people who want to become singers? And on that subject any advice on how to make a good vlog?
Get voice lessons. I recommend myself, but I am way too busy to give them right now! And on vlogging, be interesting! Be fun, spontaneous! Don’t make it scripted, necessarily!
Finally Jonnie, if you trapped in a video arcade for eternity, what game would you play to pass the time?
Super Mario Bros!!!
Determined to be the next big star, we wish Jonnie every ounce of success on his journey, as do all of his Irish fans.
