Pokéfans rejoice! The Pokémon World Championships have landed in Boston, and with the opening ceremony came the exciting news that Pokkén Tournament is en route to the Wii U in Spring 2016.

Pokkén Tournament, which developed in partnership between Bandai Namco Entertainment and The Pokémon Company, landed in Japanese arcades this summer despite being teased as far back as 2013. In the past, Pokémon arcade games have had a terrible track record of being localised, with games like Pokémon Battrio and Pokémon Tretta never seeing a release outside Japan. Its worldwide release in Spring 2016 makes it the first Pokémon title to see a release on the Wii U console.

This spin-off title follows the familiar style of Tekken and Soul Calibur games that Bandai Namco Entertainment are known for, and is one of the first instances where players are able to completely control their Pokémon, movements and attacks, which allows for a more dynamic gaming experience. Not to mention the incredible detail that has been put into the Pokémon and stages, adding a lifelike glow to our favourite pocket monsters.

Nine Pokémon have been confirmed for the Pokkén arcade series to date: Charizard, Pikachu, Machamp, Gengar, Suicune, Blaziken, Gardevoir, Lucario and Weavile, with the surprise addition today of a special Cosplay Pikachu, in its Pikachu Libre form. A varied supporting cast of Pokémon are also available in battle to provide assists to players.
