With Marvel’s Jessica Jones only recently wrapping up and season 2 of Daredevil  already deep in their filming, it is no surprise that Marvel and Netflix are already gearing up for their next venture into their third Defenders prequel series.

Alfre Woodard (True Blood, 12 years a Slave) is the latest casting for Marvel’s Luke Cage as a politician named Minetta. Speculation and rumours suggest she may in fact end up having a darker side and we may see her channel the character of Black Mariah from the comics.

Black-Mariah-Luke-Cage

Created by Steve Englehart and George Tuska in 1972, Black Mariah was a 30 stone, New York criminal, and leader of a gang known as the Rat Pack. Their crimes ranged from stealing the valuable possessions from the bodies of the deceased to distributing the drug Acid Z, which eventually led its users into crazy town.

Most ominous of all however is Black Mariah’s weapon of choice, her poisoned knitting needles. Okay, maybe ominous wasn’t the right word, but she does knows how to use a gun. Lets just hope her knitting needles of despair and destruction don’t unravel all Luke Cage’s heroic efforts though.

Luke Cage (Mike Colter) or Power Man will first be introduced in Jessica Jones (which is is expected to drop before the end of the year). He possesses a number of superhuman physical attributes including superhuman strength, superhuman stamina, superhuman durability and an accelerated healing factor. Cage is a hero known to clean up the streets of New York for a fee, as a “Hero for Hire,” and as was the case with Kingpin and Daredevil and, we expect, the Purple Man and Jessica Jones,  every great hero needs an equally great villain to thwart.

Are you excited to see if Woodard is Black Mariah, and how do you think Marvel and Netflix would handle this character?
