Netflix’s Dragons: Race To The Edge, an animated series based on the How To Train Your Dragon films, premieres June 26th on Netflix and we couldn’t be more excited.
At a recent press conference I attended, Art Brown and Doug Sloan, the executive producers of the show, confirmed that the series will be throwing an ear to diversity with regards to the extended characters.
“We have much more time to spend with the side characters in the series,” said Sloan. “And so the cast of characters can be more diverse and interesting as a result. There are two female dragon characters in the series, as well as one other that’s a baddie.”
Adding that we’ll be seeing more fleshed out characters with the stories in the series, saying: “With the series, we’re able to use specific stories about specific characters and their dragons, really build those relationships while still having specific stories about obviously Hiccup and Toothless and Astrid.”
They also talked about the action of the show, talking up the animation quality the first season will provide.
“It’s going to be surprisingly similar to the action in the film.” Brown stated. “We’ve been able to do a lot more this year with the dragons and the dragon fighting and the action and the flying and all that, just because we’ve been able to develop some new technology that’s allowed us to do much more complicated things on television than we ever could before. And we’re really getting closer and closer to the film as we proceed with the series.”
The How To Train Your Dragon films have one of the most lovable casts around, and the show expanding on those characters for future film appearances is a great idea. Given the movies have an over-arching plot of their own, they don’t have as much time to flesh out branches of the lore and the side characters, but a show can do that for them, priming characters to get a bigger audience on the big screen.
And the adorable merchandise. Just think of the adorable merchandise.
Dragons: Race To The Edge comes to Netflix Friday, June 26th.
