Invasion Dublin

The weekend just gone is one of my favourites in terms of geeking out.

Everything was about Star Wars and I could not have been happier. As a Star Wars fan I always look forward to May 4th. I love how excited other fans get and the internet explodes with Star Wars appreciation even though that may be misplaced when aimed at certain movies but let’s not drag up all the issues some of us might have (justifiably of course) with those particular movies and move on!

When I found out that Invasion Dublin was going to be back this year I definitely couldn’t miss it. Although it ran from the 3rd to the 5th I could only attend on the 4th (very appropriate though) and while Declan was penning his thoughts on the women of Star Wars I decided to make my way down to the RDS in Dublin.

Invasion DublinThis wasn’t my usual trip to a convention or expo, I’m used to seeing timetables of panels and talks or just a bustling trade hall, Invasion Dublin is an entirely different creature. A hybrid of both, it was a very engaging experience with staff running events in full costumes, glorious and detailed displays and a multitude of interactive events.  Truthfully I spent a lot of my time browsing through merchant stalls cursing my lack of credits but still mesmerized by products on display.

This event unlike a few others I attend  regularly attracted a much larger audience of children. There were tiny rebels and clone troopers everywhere and it was an amazing thing to see and instilled me with the hope that the fandom will not only live on for  generations but it will be taken of by folk just as dedicated as us diehards. Just to prove their dedication to the series many of the kids spent their time at the event enrolled in Jedi training, honing their skills in the force and wielding light sabres.

Even though it felt as if it was more centred towards children with the Jedi Training and the likes I did not regret being there at all. There were plenty of photo opportunities between staff  dressed up and displays of Wookies, Scout Troopers, Sith, Jedi and Yoda and that’s not counting the hundreds of fans who attended (young and old) who showed up in full costume!

Whether you were with friends or family, Invasion Dublin had tonnes to offer and if it returns next year then I couldn”t recommend going, it’s a treat for die hard fans and just families looking for a fun activity!
