H. R. Giger, the surrealist artist whose creations helped spawn the eponymous Alien films, has passed away aged 74 from injuries sustained in a fall. Giger, who was born Hans Rudolph in an Eastern Swiss town of Chur in 1940, became an artist from a relatively early age after having studied architecture and industrial design.

While most famous for his work creating the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise, Giger’s extensive career has wandered many avenues, exploring a style he dubbed ‘biomechanical’. Much of his favorite pieces and designs can be found in his museum in Gruyeres in central Switzerland, and in his published books Necronomicon Vol. 1 and 2.

R.I.P sir, the worlds of science fiction and horror owe you a great debt.
