Ok ok we know what you’re thinking (that’s right we’re mind readers)…Bridesmaids…why would geeks watch this? Well truth be told we were stuck for something to watch and there is only so many times you can watch Scott Pilgrim, Sucker Punch and Kick Ass back to back! So begrudgingly we rented a copy of Bridesmaids, it was a comedy and it penned itself as the girls’ version of The Hangover!
Were they wrong? Hell yeah! This movie is nothing like The Hangover…we actually liked Bridesmaids! (Don’t get us wrong Hangover is ok but we really don’t like Zach Galifianakis the man just isn’t funny…ever!) Bridesmaids is dirty, awkward, sexy, funny and bloody entertaining!
Annie, played by Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live, Knocked Up, 30 Rock), is a failed chef in her mid-thirties on the verge of a life crisis, living with a creepy British man (Matt Lucas) and his sister, her business has collapsed and she’s still single which is all bad enough but when she finds out that her best friend Lillian is getting engaged she can’t help but feel even worse.
Despite her feelings however Annie is determined to uphold her duties as Chief Bridesmaid but when everything she does backfires whether it is giving the entire Bridal party food poisoning during a dress fitting in a very selective and upmarket Bridal Boutique or ruining the hen party by being kicked off the plane. However all is not lost as Lillian’s new best friend Helen steps in to make it all better not only upstaging Annie but ousting her as head bridesmaid all of which she does with a smile!
Kristen is brilliant as Annie and her scenes with Helen (Rose Byrne) are the stuffy bitchy cat fights and back stabbing friends are made of! However the show is stolen by Melissa McCarthy, who many will recognise as Sookie from the Gilmore Girls, Molly from Mike and Molly and Dena from Samantha Who. Melissa plays rough and straight talking Bridesmaid Megan, adding much of the humour and unadulterated filth to the movie! Melissa…we salute you!
It’s not just Melissa though that you’ll recognise, Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live fame plays Lillian, Ellie Kemper from the US version of The Office plays sheepish Bridesmaid Becca
Bridesmaids also hinges on a love story between Annie and a police officer (Chris O’ Dowd – The IT Crowd) and while that’s all well and good it doesn’t really add much to the film (thankfully they don’t try to make it a romantic comedy!) bar a particular scene where Annie is desperately trying to catch Officer Rhodes scene!
If you thought girl comedies were all about sassy bitchy plastics (who doesn’t love Mean Girls) then you need to check out Bridesmaids! The film proves that girls can be just as gassy, gross, obnoxious and stupid as their male counterparts. Bridesmaid isn’t going to enlighten you or help you reach a new level of Nirvana we’re not watching The Hours!
However Bridesmaids will have you in stitches laughing and is guaranteed to entertain you so the Hangover can move over because we’ve got a new favourite drunken, gassy, shenanigan having group of friends!
Good Points
Funny and dirty
Not a Romantic Comedy
