With the chilly evenings drawing in and the evil monsters of Christmas past looming outside your doorstep it’s only natural that us folk at the @rcade will be spending more time locked inside our humble abodes by the fire with a steaming mug of hot chocolate. However with so many channels to choose from and so much crappy TV to wade through how can you be sure to watch the good stuff?
Well fret no more, as the @rcade highlights some of the better and more entertaining TV for your each week in the our own very special TV Guide!
Girl Interrupted
TG4, Monday 8th November 9.30pm
This is one to set your Sky+ box too. Think mental institutions, crazy yet seemingly lovable psychopaths and one slightly pathological Wynona Ryder playing a neurotic self indulgent girl who enrols in a psychiatric institution after her family become disillusioned with her attempts at suicide and all round craziness. Girl Interrupted has got drama, a compulsive storyline and complex characters that come together despite their circumstances. The film features fantastic performances from the late Brittany Murphy, Angelina Jolie as well as a whole heap of other well known actors.
Trapped in an institution where her only friends can change in an instant, crippled by her the inner workings of her mind, herself doubt and despair, Winona is stellar in her performance as Susanna Kaysen (the woman whose experiences and writings on her time in an institute inspired this movie).
This isn’t just a simple chick flick or weepy movie, there is depth to the film and is definitely one to watch.
Bright Young Things
Tuesday, RTE1, 10.15pm
A particularly appropriate show for the gamers and geeks of high intelligence and social awkwardness among us! If you ever felt ahead of the class and like you belonged in MENSA then you’ll be able to relate to these highly gifted kids from around the country. Gifted Irish children, of whom there are over 20,000 estimated to currently exist in Ireland, explain the highs and lows that come with having such a powerful IQ. Staff and students from DCU’s Centre for Talented Youth show us how they cope with frustration, unrealised potential and the problems they face slotting into the conventional school system.
South Park – Coon 2 & Mysterion Rises
Saturday, Comedy Central X, 10.20pm
We really can’t seem to get enough of the new season of South Park and Trey Park and Matt Stone don’t seem to losing their touch. We all remember Cartman’s somewhat unsuccessful stunt as superhero ‘The Coon’ well now he makes his rise once more but when his new super hero team ‘Coon and Friends’ kick him out of the club for being a ‘dick’ he turns to someone even more powerful. After BP’s oil spill in the Gulf, the company managed to release demons and then the God of Chaos and Darkness Cthullu. Well what better way to get your revenge then by enlisting his help. Mysterion, the Coon’s rival hero also begins to unravel the mysteries of his own past and we realise that one South Park kid is a little bit more special than he first appeared to be!
That’s it for this week. As always let us know your thoughts on these shows and more on our forums and tell us what you think!
