Case 39

There is nothing more terrifying than a little girl dressed up looking plain and frail singing a creepy lullaby while wielding a butcher’s knife! Admit it that image kind of freaks you out a little bit! It was last year in cinema we saw trailers for Renée Zewelleger’s new movie ‘Case 39’ and were immediately hooked and thought to ourselves ‘Hey this doesn’t look that bad!’

How foolish we were…how foolish indeed!

Don’t get us wrong, this movie is scary alright…but not because it’s a horror!

What’s it about?

Renée Zewelleger plays Emily Jenkins, a compassionate but overworked Social worker who has just been handed her 39th case…dun dun dun! The case is centred on a 10 year old girl called Lillith and her parents who are believed to be abusing their daughter – who is showing signs of the alleged abuse.
After saving Lillith from being roasted alive by her parents, who believed they were sending her back to hell, Emily offers to take care of the little girl until a foster home can be found for her. Soon after things start to go wrong for Emily, as people she holds dear to her begin to die gruesome deaths one by one.

Is Lillith all she appears to be? Is there something sinister following the little girl? Emily better find out soon before she falls victim to the evil.

(Note…our piece above actually makes this movie sounds interesting but thats just our awesome journalist skills not the movie!)

Who is in it?

Well you will no doubt recognise Renée Z or Bridget Jones as she is more famously known. The movie also stars Ian McShane, who’s been making movies since 1962 and Bradley Cooper from ‘The Hangover’ and ‘My Little Eye’. You will also recognise Jodelle Ferland, who played Sharon in the Silent Hill movie and from Twilight: Eclipse (she also did the voices of the Little Sisters in the Bioshock series).
None of these are actually any good at making the movie any more appealing, to quote ‘American Dad’ (You know you’re not a proper journalist when you quote from Amercian Dad) ‘Acting isn’t hard…Renée Zewelleger just makes it look hard’.
Jodelle isn’t half bad as Lillith but we hope she manages to break out of the creepy little girl role before she becomes typecast!

What should I watch instead?

Ring
The Exorcist
Silent Hill
The Omen

Is it really that bad?

The scariest thing about this movie is Renée Zewelleger! She is so unbelievable in her role as Emily Jenkins that you end up realising that the people who get killed earlier on in the movie are the lucky ones and can only hope that she comes to the same fate (only more painful and bloodier) by the end! This subgenre of Horror movies has been done to death and unless you are going to try and reinvent it or add in some sort of interesting plot or hell we’ll even settle for decent actors then don’t both even trying to make this movie!

Anyone who is even considering bringing out another movie like ‘Case 39’ better sit down and do their homework first and should definitely consult the movies we’ve listed above to get a decent idea on how to put together a good creepy child horror movie!

Save your money and rent one of the classics, don’t bother renting this or even accepting it in a 2 for 1 deal…definitely not worth watching…ever!
