The Looks

Every now and again a friend will drop something in your lap and (hopefully it’s not a bowling ball or a bowling ball on fire) you will wonder why you’d never played it, watched it or even heard about it. Well when a friend of the @rcade’s sent us a link to a song by ‘the Looks’ called ‘Enemies’ on YouTube we were completely mesmerized. Over the past few weeks we thought we’d built up our reputation and increased our knowledge in all things music but as it happens we have a lot to learn (cue heartfelt music).

‘the Looks’ are a four piece indie punk band from the capital city and they clearly mean business. With their debut double sided single released in July of this year, the lads are once again getting stuck into studio work and continuing to work on their music.
Their sound is the kind of music that cool and alternative indie college people listen to at cool parties, it’s fast, catchy and smart.
If you are looking for a band that people will think you are cool for listening to then it has to be these guys. We predict big things for ‘The Looks’ if their first two songs are anything to go by, these lads are going a very long way but before that we manage to catch up with them for a chat…

Could you start by telling us a little about each of you? Why did you guys form a band?

Well myself (Fatty), Pearl and Nightlight met in school back in the Clinton administration; remember that crazy sax playing fiend! Well his smooth licks and success with the ladies was a real inspiration. From that date on we became The Looks and we’ve been The Looks ever since. Over the preceding years we picked up Declan on drums and most recently Dave on Synth.

Have you always been interested in music as a career?

It only really becomes the plan when you’re out of college for two years and you still haven’t got a job in the field in which you were trained. So basically as of two years ago music has become our careers; coinciding nicely with the recession so we don’t look like bums

Can you sum up your sound? Is there a particular band or performer that has influenced your music?

We’re officially somewhere between Foals and the Strokes. Thank you to whoever said that, oh wait that was me. But I think it describes our sound. It’s always difficult to describe your own sound I suppose we’re too close to it. But when we stand back from it we play a collaboration of music we enjoy listening to. Basically we try and jump straight to the club remix of an amazing song.

Where did the name for the band come from?

I don’t even know anymore. It’s just our name now like anybodies name your mummy and daddy gave it to you and you got to do what you can with it.

Both Romeo and Enemies have pretty cool and different videos, what was the inspiration for them? Did you have a favourite?

Thank you for saying that. Krank were the production company who made the Enemies video. We had such a good time having a sports day in the phoenix park. I hope we bring back sports days. The Romeo video was a DIY job that we sunk our teeth into and when we stepped back and watched it just worked with the track. In fact we realized we were multi talented golden gods.

Where can we see you guys perform?

We’re back in studio at the moment but we’re planning to tour the second single, which comes out in February, around the country along with a few UK dates. All the dates will be up on our MySpace and Facebook and such places

What’s the plan for the band? Ideally where would you like to be in five years?

I’d like to be heading to the studio on a hover bus or at least on my hover board. But we’ll probably be sticking it to the corporation that has is slowly taking over the world. I hope our first few albums have sold well too.

Finally if you were trapped in an Arcade, what one game would you play to pass the time?

What sort of arcade are we referring to, strictly machines? Or does it have x boxes, a hell either way I’d have to say Time crisis. What a game and my Namco gun doesn’t work anymore. I’m going to save the president’s daughter if it’s the last thing I do.
