Valve Takes Action On CS:GO Gambling Sites

Valve has finally broken their silence on the CS:GO Lotto controversy, where two prominent YouTubers owned a site they were promoting.

CS:GO Lotto allowed users to gamble using weapon skins for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in place of cash. This conveniently allows the site to not have to follow any legislation about gambling. Which is why it also got some flak for allowing anyone older than 13 to play.

Given that they used CS:GO skins, these websites used Steam to enable the gambling of skins. It is surprising that Valve has refused to comment until now, given the use of their platform.

That ended recently though when Erik Johnson stated that Valve has no involvement with CS:GO gambling sites. They never received money from the sites, and Steam doesn’t have a system for trading in-game items for real currency.

The only connection is that the sites use an OpenID API that allows users to prove ownership of their Steam accounts and items. However, according to Johnson:

“Using the OpenID API and making the same web calls as Steam users to run a gambling business is not allowed by our API nor our user agreements,”

He then goes on to say that Valve will start sending notices to these sites soon, requesting they cease any operations through Steam.
