It looks like the next Star Trek movie will have two Kirks at the helm! Although J.J. Abrams did not direct the most recent instalment of the series, he still has much to say on its future. As early reports on Star Trek: Beyond seem largely positive, a sequel is extremely likely. On the subject, Abrams remarked to Collider: “The answer is 100% yes, and it’s incredibly exciting.” Thanks to a tweet by reporter Scott Mantz, we can now guess what the plot will involve.

The return of Chris Hemsworth likely means the reappearance of George Kirk, James Tiberius Kirk’s father who died a hero. Time travel and parallel universes are already well established in the reboot. Consequently, the return of Poppa Kirk seems entirely possible. Captain Kirk meeting his father would be great for the character’s arc and development. Kirk is eager to live up to his father’s legacy, and meeting his father after his success on the Enterprise has a lot of potential. Furthermore, we should bear in mind Hemsworth was relatively unknown during his appearance in the first film. Consequently, the fourth film will provide him with more material and screen time to strut his stuff with Pine. Hopefully we’ll hear more about this at Comic-Con, but in the meantime, Star Trek Beyond opens in cinemas on July 22.
