Game of Thrones is a TV series that has taken the world by storm, so any news of its eventual end is like gold dust to longtime fans. Now, it has been confirmed by director Jack Bender that season seven will contain only seven episodes.
When asked by Vanity Fair if he would be returning to the show in the future, he said, “They’re only doing seven episodes, and they’ve got their regulars who have done it forever ‘…’ I haven’t been asked yet.”
It was reported that HBO were in talks back in January for two more seasons. According to an interview with Variety, Game of Thrones co-showrunner David Benioff said: “I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap.”
With only 13 more episodes promised to us, it looks like season seven will have seven episodes and season eight will have six, as opposed to its usual 10. Although it may not be all bad news as, according to the show’s executive producers, the shorter seasons will allow more time per episode. In the same Variety interview, co-showrunner D.B Weiss said the main reason for making a shorter season was due to the fact they can no longer go on producing ten episodes in its usual 12- to 14- month time frame, “It’s crossing out of a television schedule into more of a mid-range movie schedule.”
HBO have yet to make an official statement on the matter.
Doing a little of this, a little of that. If you see me holding a camera, run!
