Avid Doctor Who fans will recognise the name Paul McGann from the unfortunately short lived Doctor number eight, more casual viewers may not know him at all. The eight doctor lasted the record-breaking time of just under and hour and a half, or one film.

McGann returned in one other official short episode for the 50th Anniversary special and has appeared in countless audio and other media but the actor thinks there’s still potential there. The 20th anniversary of the film was only a week ago so in line with that he told Doctor Who Magazine:

“I’m in the slightly unusual position, even from McCoy and Colin Baker in that, with the Eighth [Doctor], it feels like there’s still a bit of potential. It feels like it ain’t quite over… Often we’re subject to rumours, and rumours are only ever rumours. But because I came back to do the Doctor, it was all the proof these fans needed that there’s still life in this thing. ”

There are mixed reviews of this Doctor among fans; some love his luscious locks and easy charm, others hate the shift in the Doctor that came with the love plot of the Doctor Who TV movie. When it was originally aired, it drew 9 million viewers in the UK although it failed to spark a new Doctor Who series.

The appearance of more than one doctor at a time is rare, but for those among us whovians who loved the witty banter among the Doctors in The Day of the Doctor will be watching this space!
