Geek N’ Bake: Pokemon Starters
Food, glorious food! Okay listen I’ll be honest with you I’ve fallen off the Video Game Gym Wagon so many times since we started, I’m weak willed but when you’re on a gaming marathon or Netflix binge, you want to shovel doritos into your face not carrot sticks! At least I do anyway!
Snacking is my downfall! I’m determined to beat it some day and these Pokémon Starters or snackers are aimed at helping fight the cravings while also being quick, easy and nutritious! All three inspired by the original starters from Gen 1, Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander and there is something here for even the pickiest of Trainers!

Pokémon Starters – Bulbasaur Salad
This green salad packs a serious punch with a zesty dressing! Packed full of iron and vitamins, you can add other greens or vegetables to suit your taste or take out what you don’t like! A handy and healthy snack, this makes a great lunch served with a toasted sesame seed bagel or bulk up your portion and add some cooked fusilli pasta for dinner!
Salad: Mixed salad leaves (lettuce, rocket, water cress, spinach) 3 sticks of celery, 5 radishes, half a cucumber, one spring onion, one small head of broccoli. Mixed seeds and grains.
Dressing: 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, a tablespoon of fresh squeezed ginger juice, juice of half a lemon, tablespoon of dark soy sauce.
If you can’t make salad then you can’t train Pokémon! This Bulbasaur salad is ideal for anyone inexperience in the kitchen; you’ll only need a sharp knife, a big bowl to serve and a sealable container for your dressing.
Start by tossing your salad leaves together, then chop your vegetables. I like to cut my cucumber and radish into thin round slices and chop the celery into chunks. Slice the spring onion into small pieces and chop the stalk off your broccoli. Chop the rest of it into small florets and then toss the veg into the salad leaves.
For the dressing measure out your liquids, I added a dash of cracked black pepper to give a small kick to it (it really doesn’t need any extra kicking!). Combine all of it together in the sealable container, I used a small lunch box container, then shake the living daylights out of it. Pop it in the fridge to chill for about 10 minutes.
Drizzle as much as you want over your salad and serve. For lunch I accompanied my Bulbasaur salad with a bagel and garnished it with a handful of mixed seeds and grains.
Would you prefer a Squirtle Smoothie to cool your jets?
Are you more of a fire-type trainer, then why not try Charmander Soup?
Pokémon Starters – Squirtle Smoothie
All of this sound like a little too much work? Yeah I know what you mean so why not take things down a notch with Squirtle! Go easy and chill out with one of these super cool blueberry smoothies and spend your time doing the things you love!
One chopped banana, one teaspoon of honey, 80g blueberries, 20g raspberries, 250ml tropical juice, 4 ice-cubes
You’re going to need a smoothie maker or have a Machamp on hand to crush and mash all your ingredients together for you! This is as easy as pie to make!
You’ll just throw all of your ingredients into the smoothie maker, no particular order and blitz it all together. No there isn’t really much else to do except pour it into a glass and enjoy! Seriously, Squirtle Smoothies are all chill!
I have a few tips for you though, if you like thick and creamy smoothies then freeze your bananas too! Peel and chop them the night before you need them and place them in the freezer! Guaranteed thicker smoothies every time! If you’d prefer a lighter smoothie, only use half of the banana and add a little more juice and ice cubes.
These smoothies are a fantastic way to kick start your day, they’re filling but they’re not heavy because there’s no dairy in them. I add in a tablespoon of linseed and grains to give it an even healthier boost. These are ideal for breakfast or as a midday/late evening snack to help beat those sugar cravings.
Need something with a bit more of a punch why not try our Charmander Soup?
Why not take a leaf out of Bulbasaur’s lifestyle and relax with this leaf green salad?
Pokémon Starters – Charmander Fire-Red Soup
Prefer a little more action and spice? Then you’re going to want to pick a Charmander! While this little guy might look all cute and innocent he packs serious power much like this inviting red pepper soup! You’ve been warned, fiery breath awaits those who can’t handle these spicy little guys!
Three red peppers, half a punnet of cherry tomatoes, five carrots, one red onion, three garlic cloves, three sticks of celery, two tins of chopped tomatos, one veg stock cube.
Spices: Dried chili peppers (hottest you own), one tbsp chili flakes, two tsp hot chili powder, one tsp black pepper, a pinch of sea salt, half tsp cumin, half tsp coriander, 1/4 tsp turmeric. Extra chili flakes to garnish.
I fricking love soup! I could give or take Charmander unless you’re talking specifically about Ash’s one! That lil guy had serious attitude! So in honour of his spicy personality and fire type lizards everywhere here’s a bowl soup guaranteed to set your energy levels ablaze!
Start by de-seeding and then chopping your peppers into medium-small chunks. Toss them into a baking tray with the cherry tomatoes and spritz with a little olive oil. Give them a toss together to evenly coat then place in a pre-heated oven on 190C and roast for 25 – 35 minutes.
While your peppers and tomatos are in the oven, finely chop your onion and celery and slice the garlic. Toss all of that into a deep sauce pan with a healthy splash of olive oil. Sauté until soft and then add your mixed spices, stirring it all together to give everything a good coating.
Add two tins of chopped tomatoes and then using one of the empty tins, dissolve a stock cube in hot water and add to your saucepan.
Your peppers and tomatoes should have a twinge of char by now so remove them from the oven and add to the saucepan and stir. Allow this to simmer for twenty minutes.
In the meantime peel your carrots, roughly chop them into sharp chunks. Toss them in a little olive oil, some sea salt and a heaped spoon of chili powder and pop them in the oven to roast.
Take a blitzer to your spoon and make sure there are no big chunks of veg, your soup will be nice and thick but if you prefer lighter just add more water and season to your taste.
Simmer for another ten minutes then remove from the heat. Take the carrots out of the oven and set aside, draining any excess oil. Ladel up a healthy and hot bowl of soup and blast it with some of those spicy carrot chunks. Garnish with some chili flakes and serve!
For those who like their Charmanders on the tame side, add some cream or coconut milk to cool things down!
Prefer things on the lighter side, then grab a Bulbasaur Salad?
Too hot then why not cool down with a Squirtle Smoothie?
