To prepare for his upcoming turn as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League Part One, J.K. Simmons is going to be doing some reading for the role to get into character.

Speaking to Collider, the Oscar-winning actor explained that though he’s seen the many other actors who’ve played Gordon, he won’t be using them as his reference. Rather, he’ll be using the comics to get a full grasp of the Commissioner and his role in the world of DC.

“Obviously, a lot of really wonderful actors have played that character previously, and most of them I saw at the time the movies came out, never imagining that I would be doing the same thing,” He said. “So, I can’t say that I don’t have some impression of that character in my head that’s based on what I saw, but I’m not planning on going back and watching any of the other films. I’m just planning on learning as much as I can about him through the comics and getting my feet wet in the first movie, and then hopefully continuing on from there.”

Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League Part One has already begun filming, but as of right now reportedly only smaller scenes are being sorted while the cast crew get together and finish going through the motions for the bigger set-pieces. Simmons will join the production in a couple of months to begin filming his contribution to the blockbuster.

Justice League Part One will fly into cinemas July 17, 2017.
