Former Sony Executive Amy Pascal has purchased the rights to make a film based on game developer Zoe Quinn‘s book on Gamergate, Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself.

Deadline report that the rights were bought after a bidding battle with several other production companies interested in the story. The book charts Quinn‘s (pictured) experience as a primary target of internet harassment at the hands of a self described movement known as Gamergate. Gamergate spawned from a meandering blog post published in August of last year from an ex-boyfriend of Quinn‘s which alleged, falsely, that she had romantic relations with games journalists to gain positive press for her game, Depression Quest. Under a banner of yearning for better ethics in games journalism, the ensuing mob has since picked many targets and become notorious for harassing behaviour online, attempting to bully anyone targeted in whatever mean’s possible.

Since the advent of Gamergate, Quinn has spoken to both the UN and Google on the issues of cyber-terrorism, cyber-bullying and online harassment, with hopes to legitimize the issues and pursue help for those who are affected by them on a daily basis.

Many actresses are said to be interested, with Avengers star Scarlet Johannson at the top of the list to star. Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum will oversee the adaptation while Pascal finances.

Quinn‘s book will be published September, 2016 with the film expected sometime thereafter.
