Here’s a fun fact: the only Final Fantasy not currently playable on modern consoles is Final Fantasy XII. Its release on Playstation 2 remains its only release thus far.
At a recent Distant Worlds concert, composer Arnie Roth took to the stage to announce that a remake of Final Fantasy XII is currently in development over at Square Enix.
This news is hardly shocking – the Final Fantasy X remasters did very well on both Playstation 3 and 4 and with Final Fantasy XII still only playable on a Playstation 2, it’s a no-brainer to bring it over. The curious part is that the word ‘remake’ was used instead of remaster. A remaster is more likely what Roth meant, but a remake isn’t entirely out of the realms of possibility. Either way, with this news spreading, a confirmation from Square Enix is surely close.
Final Fantasy XII was the last Final Fantasy to be released on the PS2 and was released just 2 months before the expanded universe of Final Fantasy XIII was announced. It met critical acclaim and features an active battle system among other facets that make it a unique entry into the series.
