This is not an easy list to put together but let’s get something set first – this is not the top ten best opening sequences, if that was the case this list would have to be at least top 25! No this is purely dedicated to the opening theme songs, music that still rings in our ears!

10. Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors

I always forget the name of this show and to be honest I don’t remember much about it growing up other than I used to really despice Jayce’s tin knight companion/sidekick. He was more annoying than Snarf and that’s saying something! Regardless the theme song does stick out purely because it could have easily fit in on an 80’s pop chart at the time… an 80’s pop chart about greek legends in space… Ulysses 31 is here too just in case you’re wondering!

9. The Real Ghostbusters

Unfortunately I don’t remember a whole lot about this show either BUT the theme song can’t ever be forgotten. Neither can my favourite character, Janine Melnitz, I like to think I channel a bit of her in my actual job!

8. Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers

This one is more of a dedication to an Arcade writer who has a soft spot for Gadget! My early morning routine when I was a younger was a cup of porridge/cereal (I went through a phase) and back to back episodes of Chip ‘N Dale, those were the days and I now have a hankering for cup porridge!

7. Ulysses 31

Literally the only thing I remember about Ulysses 31 is the bloody theme song! It’s one of those earworms that burrows it’s way into your brain surfacing every now and again when you think you hear it, you didn’t actually but it doesn’t matter because now you can’t stop humming it/singing it in your head!

6. X-Men

I actually had Transformers in here purely because I feared for my life if I didn’t mention them but I never watched them as a kid and since this is my list, I’m amending it! This one goes to X-Men and it should be higher but since I’m amending to include it and it wasn’t my first thought, it stays put (I’d actually swap positions with Duck Tales btw!).

5. Captain Planet

Probably the wordiest opening song on this list but it’s hear for one reason – WE CAN ALL RECITE THIS OPENING OFF BY HEART! If you say you can’t then either you were born after the show went off the air or you have suffered a head trauma and seriously need to visit a doctor so you can recall it all once more! Up to this point everything has been pretty good on this list but now we’re getting to the real winners!

4. Duck Tales

If anyone tells you they didn’t like Duck Tales growing up, you actually have a civic/moral duty to remove them from the population – honestly, it’s right there in the closing credits! Recently word got out that the show is making a comeback, I urge and I assume everyone else does, that creative team behind this new project reuse this classic theme song!

3. Thundercats

Okay I’ll admit it, I’ve done the Thundercats call when summoning/opening the door to people! Hear the magic, hear the roar… feel my goosebumps! This theme song should be played in gyms across the world, it’s got a great pace, nifty beat and it’s amazing at getting you pumped – anyone want to fight Mumm-Ra now?

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Oh now this the controversial choice – there’s no doubt that this is one of the best theme songs for anything ever! No the controversy extends to the lyrics and whether your house/clan of ninja wannabes – was it Ninja or Hero Turtles?! (For the record… it was Ninja)

1. Jem and the Holograms

If you don’t know me on a personal level, then you’re probably appauled (you better not be appauled!) that Jem and the Holograms is the number one theme song! If you do know me, you’re probably guffawing and rolling your eyes (fair enough!). The reason why this is number one? Well it encompasses everything about our childhoods, it’s bright, colourful (and I’m talking about the music here), it’s catchy, poppy and the second the first note is played you know exactly what show it belongs to!
