No folks this is not a joke.
Toho have just released a teaser image for their 29th entry in their long running Godzilla franchise.
Titled Godzilla 2016, it will be co-directed by Japanese film makers Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan) and Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion).
Following the success of Gareth Edward’s Godzilla last year Toho decided to atomic breath some new life into the franchise, which was believed to be done and dusted following the 2004 movie Godzilla:Final Wars which saw everyone’s favourite Kaiju battle all of his previous rivals in a battle royal that spanned the globe.
The image released by Toho is the footprint of the King of Monsters, this is generally the last thing office buildings see before it comes crashing down on their roof.
Variety report that Anno will oversee the script, while Higuchi will be responsible for the films special effects. With these two long time anime masters at the helm this has the potential of being one of the best Godzilla outings in a very long time.
Will we get a fully CGI Godzilla or will it be a man in a rubber suit? The traditionalist in me wants to see some rubber suit action. Regardless, I reckon Toho will up their game in order to compete with the westernised version of this long time Japanese icon.
One thing is for sure, for us Kaiju fans more Godzilla is always a good thing.
