Yik Yak is a geographically based messaging app that lets users post anonymous messages to those in their immediate vicinity. Recently this app has got some serious attention after being under some heavy fire for controversy.
The fact that this app focuses on anonymity in a localized area has quickly received criticism stating that it is a ripe landscape for cyberbullying, and Yik-yak1while most of the users on this use if for communicating trivial things it can also be filled with gossip and slander and although the app requires users to be 18,  younger people are able to get access through parental permission.
One particular scary incident resulted a school in Los Angeles to go into lockdown mode from a message on this app which states ” If you go to Costa, you should watch out very closely at school today”
Similar incidents have caused two schools to shut down and increased security in several other schools. And while these particular events don’t name Yik Yak in particular, it was found in a study that 35% of all violent schools from August 2013 to January 2013 came via anonymous texting and social media.
Although it looks like the next best thing in messaging it just might follow a similar path as its competitors, Secret, Whisper and ask.fm which have had a tough time after experiencing similar notoriety in the last year.
