Pacific Rim, the robot vs. kaiju blockbuster from last year, set somewhat of a standard for CGI-action films. With its huge set pieces and penchant for interesting robot and monster designs, audiences around the globe were left incredibly satisfied, despite the somewhat disappointing sales figures. However, finally Guillermo Del Toro, the visionary filmmaker who spear-headed the project, has confirmed that a sequel is in the works, along with more comics and a cartoon series. Coming from Variety, Pacific Rim 2 will come from Universal on April 7, 2017.
Along with Del Toro, Zak Penn, Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will all return for their respective roles as script-writer and producers. The film will be release in full 3D and IMAX. Speaking with Buzzfeed, Guillermo said ‘The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
