Is the Wii U for You?

When the Nintendo Wii was released in 2006, it became a must have console in every home. Since then 96.56 million units have been sold worldwide with it’ competitors being out sold every month. In a bid to compete with the Wii, Microsoft launched the Xbox Kinect and Sony launched Playstation Move. The Kinect was successfully under it’s own merit but the Move was slated by critics and users alike.

So Microsoft and Sony must be sweating as the launch to the Wii’s successor gets closer. As of November 30th you will be able to get your hands on the Nintendo’s latest creation The Wii U ( just in time for xmas ). So what has the Nintendo got up their sleeves?

Nintendo announced the launch of the Wii U back in July 2011 and the most obvious change is that the Wii U is comprised of two parts. One console and then, the most interesting thing about the Wii U, the GamePad. The Game Pad has a 6.2inch touchscreen built in so you can use the Wii without a TV. You will be able to use the GamePad as a normal controller and it’s compatible with the current Wii remote, balance board and nunchuk. But it can also be used like a tablet with buttons and has a camara and microphone. A major feature will be the ability to stream games from the console to the GamePad. The main downside  is only two GamePads are supported per console. But at the cost of $170 for another GamePad, you probably won’t want many more. A more traditional controller, the Wii U Pro Controller, will be available to buy separately and I must say it that looks suspiciously a lot like an X Box controller.

There will be two versions released, the basic white console which will have 8GB of storage and the premium black console that will have 32GB. But the specs are nothing to marvel at. The console will support 1080p HD graphics but the technology behind it is 4 years old. It has 2GB ram, 1GB for games and 1GB for system software. So all in all nothing to brag about.

Although Nintendo has come out and confirmed that they are making Nintendo TVii. It seems they want to follow in Google footsteps and are creating an on-demand, streaming TV solution.

So will people be crashing through the doors of their local supermarket this Christmas for it? European prices have yet to be announced but with the basic package priced at $300, it definitely will not be cheap but only time will tell if Wii-U is the future for Nintendo!
