The upcoming title published by Square Enix, Thief is getting a pre-order exclusive bonus mission. Scheduled for February 25th, 2014, the extra mission will include a challenge for players to break into a bank and take off with as much loot as possible. The Level will be based off a map from Thief 2: Metal Age, as a throwback to the earlier titles.
Now this is possibly the last thing I wanted to hear today, pre-order exclusive missions are some of the most annoying things the industry has developed in the last five years. Being forced to pre-order a game you don’t know is good, primarily just to play a mission, that you want be able to play.
What if the resulting game comes out terrible? (which by the news and early feelers it’s been getting it might just be but that’s for another time) You just spend your money on an extra mission for a game that isn’t good and you don’t want to play any more. You can wait for reviews because they will come out after pre-orders but you won’t get that bonus! It makes me wonder if the developers even have any confidence for sales in the title and what that spells ofr the overall product. I’m a huge fan of the Thief franchise, and this just adds another black mark to this games image right now but as a loyal fan I can’t wait for reviews so it looks like I’ll have to pre-order… don’t disappoint me Square Enix.
