We all do it. Sometimes we even know beforehand that the project we’re undertaking isn’t going to go anywhere. Maybe this is a cosplay idea. Perhaps a model you’re building. Or even a book you’re writing. Finding the time and focus to start and finish a project can be exhausting. A point comes toward the end where you come to realise the endeavour was doomed from the moment you took out that glue gun. Unfortunately, as a species, we do love to indulge our little fantasies. In this case, fantasies of a completed project.
We’ll generally go through a number of stages before we come to the point of abandonment.
The Big Idea
‘Why have I never thought of this before?’ It almost comes as a shock; this isn’t just a good idea, it’s fantastic! It’s not going to be easy. Then again. Is anything this good ever easy?
The Commitment
It’s official. This is happening. I’m ready.
It Begins…
You just love that ‘new project’ feeling. You’re productive, energetic and just filled with the vision of a finished product.
NOTHING can stop you!
The Distraction
Except maybe the one or two hiccups with crumbling Worbla… no biggie, you can handle it.
Or that hospital trip to get a needle removed from my thumb. It’s cool. Wait, you were to go where this weekend?
Your thoughts have scattered and you begin to understand that perhaps this project is going to be a little trickier than you thought.
The Break
You’ll be fine after a little time away from it. You can come back to it with fresh eyes and a new drive.
It’s going to be okay. Just keep telling yourself that.
The Realisation
You quickly come to understand that you like your free time. You may even have started to hate this little project of yours. It hits you suddenly. You can’t go back to it. You don’t even want to.
Self-Loathing
You’re a terrible, terrible person. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you? You’ve spent so much time and money already and you just can’t even force yourself to complete this.
Final Push
It’s like you’re dying inside…. piece by piece. Why can’t I finish this?
The End
You just can’t deny it anymore. This whole thing was bound to be a disaster.
