Otaku Digest: Morals For Dating Armoured Insects

The pickings this season are growing ever slimmer but we persevere and continue on strong. Welcome everyone to this week’s instalment of Otaku Digest where we delve into the wide waters of each anime season looking at every new anime for release to see if they make a good first impression. As you all know, we judge the anime based on that very first episode and determine whether they’re worth sticking with for a whole season. Obviously no one has time for all the series that are released (except me!).

So far this season has been very hit or miss as far as hard hitters are concerned, especially compared to the spring season we had. Nonetheless we dive into this week’s anime, Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai, Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou and Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan.

Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai

This week should be called ‘long titles week’ but first up is Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai or SHIMONETA: A 20910-nFhipmAVBvP5Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist; the English does not help this title. The anime originally aired on July 4 and is an ecchi, comedy and school anime giving us a light-hearted kick-off to the week. This anime is set sixteen years after the Law for Public Order and Morals in Healthy Child-Raising was passed, banning crass language in the country. Present day Tanukichi Okuma has enrolled in the country’s leading elite public morals school and it’s not long till he is invited to the Anti-Societal Organisation or SOX by Ayame Kajou, its founder. Tanukichi winds up being a part of an indecent act of terrorism against the student council president Anna and, to make matters worse, she is Tanukichi’s crush. Awkward.

I knew going in that this series was going to be out there; it is about a country that has basically passed a morals law meaning no one can use what the government deems unhealthy words or take part in unhealthy activities like pornography. But wow, I really was not prepared for how weird it was; a fan-service laden anime about a place that has basically banned fan service. It is, however, genius and so well done. Considering they have made the entire narrative around the most ‘unhealthy’ age range it makes it funnier to watch teens want to be more moral and lead such clean thought lives. The characters in this anime are probably the best part, although we only really get to see Tanukichi and Ayame for the most part. Tanukichi, who has to work on his morals as he comes from an area of unbelievably low moral character to the school and area where morals are the most important thing. Then there is Ayame who keeps the front of being one of those highly moral people but is really a morals terrorist. Blue Snow, who loves dirty jokes, made this episode in my opinion.

Will I Continue to Watch? Nothing major happens but for sheer comedic effect, yes!

Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou

21093-Ja0VHwzm81ZpThe next anime is Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou or Monster Musume Everyday Life With Monsters Girls which is an ecchi, fantasy, harem, romance, seined and comedy anime, keeping with this light-hearted themed week, that began airing on July 8. Imagine a world where centaurs, harpies, cat girls and pretty much every other mythical creature you can think of are not fictional, but are real and out there. With the revelation to the world three years ago, the government passed the Cultural Exchange Between Species Act so these fantastical creatures can now integrate themselves into everyday society, or at least try to. Enter Kurusu Kimihito whose world is turned when he has been welcomed in as a volunteer to the government exchange program. As part of the program, a snake-like lamia called Miia comes to stay with him and it is his duty to help her intergrate into society and his everyday life while also taking care of her. There is one small issue Kurusa has, as Miia is hot and there is a strict law against interspecies hanky panky. Matters go from bad to worse for him when a striking centaur girl and frisky harpy move in too. Raging hormones in a teenage boy? Let the mayhem commence!

I already knew this anime was going to be fan-service central; a simple image search would tell you that, but come on! That opening scene was just obscene even for a normal fan-service anime. The major issue I have with a lot of these anime is the fact that there is never a real story to them, just fan-service and a lot of it. When I first read and heard about the anime I was genuinely interested because it seemed like it had a story behind it with fan-service thrown in for good measure. From what I have seen so far, I was wrong. There are some nice moments in there that seem like there is going to maybe be a story later on, but there’s really just not a lot to it.

Will I Continue to Watch? No! No story and basically building an anime around fan service.

Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan

Lastly we end the week with Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan or Sky Wizards Academy, a fantasy, magic, action and school anime that aired on July 920774-yekAgvfi4guP. In this anime we are taken to a world where humanity has been forced to abandon the land due to a hazard threat from magical armoured insects. Now humanity take refuge and live in floating aerial cities. From this move new beings evolved from humanity; wizard and combat mages who can fly and fight against the insects using special magical powers. We meet a young man named Kanata Age who lives on the floating academy city of Misutogan. Where he was once a celebrated wizard known as the Black Master Swordsman of the S128 special team, he is now despised as a traitor of the special team. After all this, he ends up assigned as the instructor of e601, a team that has been defeated 10 consecutive times and is made up of three girls called Lecty Eisenach, Rico Flamel and Misora Whitale. The girls all come with their own peculiar oddities. Can Kanata whip them into shape?

I was really excited for this anime. It has everything a first episode should have; fantasy, magic, giant bugs and action with some school thrown in for good measure. This anime was the best way to end Otaku Digest this week. Not much happened in the episode since they did spend most of it describing and giving each character exposition time, which actually worked in this episode, where sometimes i can be boring. However, it really works here because for every piece of information they give about the characters, you are asking just as many if not more questions as well. They really drive it home that Kanata is some sort of traitor and has obviously done something terrible but they never even let on to what it could have been, making it even more nerve wrecking that at the beginning scene he seems to be the big hero of it all, nearly sacrificing himself for his team. It was a brilliant lead in to what I hope is a great anime filled with good character development and narrative.

Will I Continue to Watch? Yes! Hells yes! I can see this being a hit!
