There was some controversy surrounding the announcement of About Ray as the actress cast in the leading role, Elle Fanning, herself isn’t trans. However, with the advent of this first trailer, we can at least be confident that the film is handling the tender subject matter with the reverence it deserves, Fanning‘s performance included.
Originally titled Three Generations, the story follows teenage boy Ray, played by Elle Fanning, who must convince their biological father to give consent for them to complete their transition. Naomi Watts plays their single mother Maggie and Susan Sarandon plays their lesbian grandmother; both women are trying to understand and support the transition amidst the turmoil. Though initial criticism still withstanding, there’s little worry that the cast won’t be on point for their roles, at least from this first impression.
About Ray is expected in cinemas sometime this year.
