Earlier this year, Jon Stewart announced he was retiring from The Daily Show, a program he has captained for over a decade and a half. Earlier today, Trevor Noah was announced as his successor. Noah is known to many in the UK for his appearances on the BBC’s QI and Live at the Apollo. Dave Itzkoff of The New York Times writes:trevor-noah
after only three appearances on that Comedy Central show, Mr. Noah has gotten a huge and unexpected promotion. On Monday, Comedy Central announced that Mr. Noah would be the new host of “The Daily Show,” succeeding Mr. Stewart after he steps down later this year.
Noah himself tweeted:
No-one can replace Jon Stewart. But together with the amazing team at The Daily Show, we will continue to make this the best damn news show!
These lines might seem unremarkable, but clearly demonstrate that Noah knows what he is undertaking. After all Stewart, during his tenure, became and continues to be widely trusted not simply as a comic who delivers consistently funny material, but as a source of information and perspective on current affairs.
Still, while this outcome seems unexpected, the consensus for now is positive. According to funnyordie.com: “Trevor is a hilarious and talented comedian and from all of us here at Funny Or Die News, we wish him and The Daily Show the best of luck!
