After much speculation and rumor slinging, it’s finally been announced today that Sony and Marvel have reached a deal that will see the web slinger join the main body of the Marvel Universe, the same world that contains Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Loki and Ultron.
While there are no details on where he’ll appear just yet, it will be a new movie and a new Spider-Man but Sony will still continue on with their franchise with the next one set for release in 2017. The deal works both ways though and Marvel characters could be popping up in Spider-Man’s world too, meaning the flood gates are truly open on what’s coming next!
Speaking about the announcement, Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige said:
I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie…Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.
Sony Pictures will still continue to own, distribute and have creative control over the Spider-Man films.
So where is Peter Parker going to pop up? Captain America: 3 Civil War seems like the best place given Spider-Man’s role in the comic arc! We’ll keep you posted webheads when more becomes available but for now… let’s just be happy!
