Starting this month, cinemas across the UK will be housing art of a different kind. The undertaking are thus far decided into five screenings each with different focuses.
– From the 10th of November, Matisse: featuring pieces from the Tate Modern and Museum of Modern Art
– From the 08th of December, Rembrandt: filmed at The National Gallery London and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam
– From the 02nd of March, Girl with the Pearl Earring: filmed at The Hague’s Mauritshuis
– From the 20th of April, Vincent van Gogh – A new way of seeing: which includes access to the Van Gogh Museum.
– From the 01st of June, The Impressionists: which will have selections from the Musée du Luxembourg Paris, National Gallery London and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The undertaking from several continents seems enormous and the results uncertain, and for that alone seem admirable. The comparison to NTL seems clear, which the Arcade has covered earlier this year. In either case, persons have take something, or rather taken something that seems recondite or elitist and attempted to bring it to the enjoyment of a wider public.
Do any of the screenings take your eye? What do you think of these attempts to use cinema to these ends?
