The Dublin Comic Market is Ireland’s longest running comic book market, taking place regularly the first Saturday of every month in the Central Hotel on Dublin’s Exchequer Street. Drawing crowds and traders from far and wide with literally thousands of comic books up for grabs. The comics themselves can range from ‘regular to rare’ and anything in between. As a comic book collector myself have left this market in the past having put my wallet through its paces with the shear amount of back issues I “needed” and came out with some seriously amazing finds here. Golden age, silver age, key issues and even some issues better forgotten (brand new day) the Dublin comic mart is an absolutely must for anyone with any level of interest in comic books. Whether your a hardcore veteran collector looking to catch up on some back issues to fill a gap in your collection, or maybe your new to comics and looking for a good start? There’s something to be found here for everyone.

Before the big market itself I caught a chance to chat with the man behind the market, Rob Curley and ask him a few questions about the Market and his own works at Atomic Diner this year.

262658_10151797588770736_730736032_nRob, how did this market come about? – “Ah, … its just one of the many ideas that I have swirling around inside my head you know? But all joking aside, I think just from travelling and seeing markets like this in London and abroad and realising that there really was nothing really like this in Ireland when the demand was there for it you know?

This Saturday sees our biggest sale yet. 60% off all back issues, 70% if you spend €150 and over. So basically €150 = €45. Hundreds of graphic novels up to 70% off cover price, thousands of recent comics from the last 12 months up to 90% off.

Tell us about some of the comics coming in 2014 that your looking forward to? Well, Image comics ..? Grant Morrison’s new book (Nameless, with artist Chris Burnham for Image comics,) Wake retuning to shelves in 2014′ and new titles like Deadly Class and Pretty Deadly.

And what can we expect from Atomic Diner in 2014? Well there’s more Roisín Dubh, League of Volunteers issue 5, Crimson Blade and Jennifer Wilde issues all coming too and in trades and graphic novels we have The League of Volunteers and Roisín Dubh all on the way as well as a possible 1916 set League of Volunteers stop animation that’s in the early phases.

One last question Rob, what one item in your collection could you never part with? Oh Jesus ALL of them. No eh … Probably my Frank Miller Daredevils, and actually all my 60’s Marvel too.

So remember tomorrow morning, Ireland’s largest and longest running comic book market returns to the Central Hotel on Exchequer Street Dublin, doors open 10am and admission is absolutely free.
