‘Little Witch Academia’ will be getting its own anime television series on Netflix. Studio Trigger announced this release at their panel on Sunday and that the American company licensed the new series. Yoh Yoshinari will direct and produce all thirty minute episodes for the show.

Little Witch Academia Shorts

Little Witch Academia was originally an animated short that Studio Trigger released in March 2013. Yoshinari wrote and directed the original anime film as part of the Anime Mirai 2013 initiative and it ran for 26 minutes. It tells the story of a young girl named Akko Kagari who enrols in a school for young witches. It follows her attempts to to fit in in the school and learning to believe in herself.

Fans of the first short helped fund a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to get a sequel made. It raised 150 thousand US dollars in six hours and, in one month, it made 625,518, which was four times its original goal. The sequel was subsequently named Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade. It premiered at Anime Expo last July and received a standing ovation from four thousand fans.

In the sequel, Akko and her two friends,  Lotte and Sucy are set with a difficult task. They must team up with a set of trouble makers and make the annual witch parade a success! However, when Akko and her friends’ aspirations for the parade start to diverge they must truly prove that friendship and magic can solve anything.

So far, there only appears to be plans to release the new series on Netflix. The studio did not mention competitors such as Crunchyroll and Funimation making it available on their services. However, with a popular anime like Little Witch Academia, there is little doubt that the show will eventually be available to fans everywhere.
