Today Robert Downey Jr. confirmed that Iron Man 4 has been given the go ahead. The news comes as something of a surprise (spot the understatement) as noted on superherohype.com. His current contract only includes Avengers: Age of Ultron and the upcoming Avengers 3 and until recently he had been stating there were no plans for the fourth in the series.
He dropped the news during his appearance on today’s Ellen DeGeneres show, at first being vague before a prompt from Ellen caused him to make a definite proclamation.
According to NME.com, Downey’s return to the role hinged on whether “Mel Gibson were to direct”. Fair to say, thoughts on I.M.4 have gone from pipe-line dream to hotly anticipated, and the current roster of unconfirmed Marvel films got a little bit more interested. That said, RDJ also hinted via a recent AMA that Marvel may be close to confirming their upcoming film calendar.
