We aren’t talking about Luigi, Tails or even Yoshi, no they’ve all had their moments in the spotlight and have thousands of fans of their own who worship them daily! No! We are talking about the sidekicks who’ve stuck by us through thick and thin, they’ve taken many a beating to save us from losing a life and they’ve even forgiven us for robbing them of all their hard earned coins! We count down six of our favourite sidekicks, help us say thanks!
Mieu – Tales of the Abyss
Cute lil bugger isn’t he?!
Mieu is a Cheagle, smalls creatures deemed sacred beasts by the Order of Lorelei, in their adult form they can spit fire. Mieu is considered odd, as an infant he possesses the ability to spit fire already and when he comes into possession of a Sorcerers Ring he also learns to speak. Aiding the party on their quest Mieu is almost more mascot than sidekick but with a determination to protect his newfound human friends, he has certainly earned a spot on our super sidekick list.
Impa – Legend of Zelda series
So Link had Navi and Epona (and if you are feeling open, you could count Mr. Tingle… the creepy b*st*rd) – such a show off! However he wasn’t the only character in the series to find himself a partner, even Princess Zelda got in on the sidekick craze and found herself a partner in the form of Impa. Her life is spent either as a handmaid or bodyguard to the Princess, to date Impa is the only confirmed member of the mysterious Sheikah. When Hyrule was threatened by Ganondorf in the Ocarina of Time it was Impa who helped train and encourage Prince Zelda to become Sheik – turning the damsel in distress into the mysterious and beautiful Ninja.
Dog – Fable II & III
He is man’s best friend (or woman if you decided to pick a female character) in Fable II. Having rescued him from a savage beating at the hands of some fat bully, the dog becomes the closest thing to family after the loss of your sister. He/she/it will sniff out buried treasure, help win over the hearts of the people by performing tricks and even fight alongside you, tearing your fallen enemies throats out. He also goes crazy for snausages…
Murray – Monkey Island series
One of the most lovable characters in the series, Murray is the floating, talking, foul mouthed pirate skull with an attitude as bad as his skin condition. Intent on spreading evil, he is the unofficial sidekick to the loveable dork that is Guybrush Threepwood, albeit only because his plans to thwart the naïve pirate often wind up aiding him!
“I’d terrorize the South Seas! I’d torture the living! I’d demolish the… er… What I meant to say was, I’d use it to pet kittens.”
Little Sister – Bioshock 2
They are both terrifying and innocent, the Little Sisters are perhaps one of the most nightmarish creatures lurking within Rapture. Little girls transformed into monsters, intent on harvesting ADAM from corpses, they are guarded by the gigantic and furious Big Daddies. In the first game they are almost villains but in the sequel the little girls take on the role of helpers. In return for rescuing them and guiding them safely to sources of ADAM the Sisters will offer you treasures and abilities that is if you choose not to forcefully remove all of the ADAM from them and kill them in the process.
Max – Sam & Max series
He’s cute, fluffy and a sociopath, Max is the Bonnie to Sam’s Clyde, Sonny to his Cher, Daxter to Jak but he also has a few screws loose. When it comes to their detective agency and skills, Max prefers the more violent approach usually offering himself as a bludgeon to be used by Sam! He is utterly devoted to helping his friend and partner and would probably take a bullet for him if it didn’t hurt so much! Max totes a luger pistol as weapon of choice but where he keeps it on his white furry naked body is beyond us…
