GAME Ireland – Employees fight back!

Over the last few days we’ve been bring your news about the closure of GAME and it’s stores in Ireland. The closing of stores all over the country has meant immediate job losses and with those losses comes a knock on affect in terms of local businesses and on a wider national economic scale.

It has been two days since GAME announced to their staff in Ireland (we are referring to stores in the Republic of Ireland – stores have closed in Northern Ireland but five will be kept open) that they were being made redundant.

In a statement last Friday the company stated:

“Further to this morning’s announcement of the suspension of trading in shares of GAME Group plc, the board has concluded that its discussions with all stakeholders and other parties have not made sufficient progress in the time available to offer a realistic prospect for a solvent solution for the business.
The board has therefore today filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator. In the short term the Board’s intention is that the business will continue to trade and discussions with lenders and third parties will continue under the protection of the interim moratorium.”

An administrator was appointed in the UK to oversee the stores there but as of yet there hasn’t been an appointment made to look after the employees and stores in Ireland.

Now it would seem that the former employees of GAME Ireland have had enough of the unfair way their former employers have treated them and are fighting back, rightly so! Staff in stores all over the country including, Monaghan, Limerick and stores in Dublin have taken to protesting by conducting sit-ins in their stores. A Facebook group has appeared this morning and is growing quickly as people rally round the staff to show support to their cause.

We here at the-Arcade.ie fully support the former staff of GAME! We’ll keep you posted as more news arises!

Be sure to check out and follow the staff over on Facebook!
