Okay, I’ll be honest. I totally made a playlist specifically for finishing the Leaving Cert. The first song on that playlist was no other than the iconic britpop anthem that came in the form of ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ by The Verve. I promise you that there is a sense of power you get walking out of an exam hall, pretending you’re Richard Ashcroft.
This song always makes me nostalgic, probably because it was one of the most played songs on the radio in 1997. I’ve been haunted by this song since I was a baby.
The song hit No.2 in the UK Charts and remained in the charts for three months, while reaching no.12 on the Billboard Hit 100 in the US.
The music video itself is one of the most recognisable videos, showing Ashcroft lipsyncing the song as he walks down a road, oblivious to his surroundings. Do not try this at home!
